Fire Safety for Families: Alarms, Extinguishers, and a Plan

Home fire safety is three habits: working alarms, a kitchen-sized extinguisher, and a two-minute escape plan everyone has practiced. This guide walks all three — calmly, without the fear.

A calm, do-it-together starting point.

01

Check your alarms

Smoke alarms on every level and outside bedrooms; CO detectors near sleeping areas. Test monthly, replace sealed-battery units every ten years.

02

Put an extinguisher where fires start

A 5 lb ABC extinguisher near the kitchen — the source of most home fires — and one in the garage. Learn the PASS technique before you need it.

03

Build a two-minute escape plan

Two ways out of every room, a meeting spot outside, and a drill kids can actually follow at 2 a.m. Practice it twice a year.

04

Sleep with doors closed

A closed bedroom door can buy you precious minutes against smoke and fire. It’s one of the simplest protections there is.
